Many people are hitting the roadways as the number of people who commute long-distances has been on the rise for many decades. As these new drivers begin to share the roads with us, it is important to understand that each of them have unique needs as a commuter. There are many more people with disabilities on the road than there used to be and even the size of personal-use vehicles is changing right before our eyes. The truth is that when cities begin to make plans to design the roads and highways of the future, there are some things that they should take into consideration.

The most important issue when it comes to the designing of highways is population. The population is growing larger with every passing year and it is important that highway design takes this into account. The smaller highways of the past are beginning to become congested with traffic as more and more drivers take to the streets. Highways need to be widened to take into account the rapid growth of the nation.

As these highways become larger to accommodate the growth in population, new rest areas should be constructed to be able to better handle road-weary travelers who need a place to rest before continuing their long journeys. Planners should consider rest areas which have better food options and more handicap-accessible restrooms. This is a matter of ethics and proper logistics and should be at the top of the list of concerns.
